Is there a new TEAS? ATI TEAS changes, and what's current in 2026
No. As of November 4, 2026, ATI has not announced a new TEAS: the current exam is the ATI TEAS Version 7, which replaced the TEAS 6 on June 3, 2022. The last real change was that 2022 switch, which split science into four areas, added biology and chemistry, and brought in new question types.
So if you searched "new ATI TEAS" because a friend, a forum or an app said the test is changing, here is what we found when we checked: ATI's own pages, nursing schools' admissions pages and 2026–2027 study guides all still describe TEAS 7. This guide covers what changed in 2022, what ATI says about how often it updates the exam, why so many pages say "2026 TEAS", how to check which version your program accepts, and what to do if a new version is ever announced before your test date.
Is there a new TEAS exam?
Not at the time of writing. The newest version is the ATI TEAS Version 7, often written TEAS 7, released June 3, 2022 (ATI TEAS Version 7). We looked for a TEAS 8, a "TEAS 2025" or a "TEAS 2026" announcement on ATI's site and on schools' TEAS pages and found none. What we did find:
- ATI's own study manual is sold as the 2026–2027 edition, and it is written for Version 7 (ATI study manual; Butler CC bookstore listing).
- City College of San Francisco lists its fall 2026 TEAS dates and says only Version 7 is accepted (CCSF TEAS page).
- NursingLicensure.org, updated in 2026, names TEAS 7 as the current version (The TEAS exam).
- Otero College lists a $120 remote TEAS through ATI "as of February 1, 2026", again for Version 7 (Otero College TEAS).
"Latest version of the TEAS test" therefore means TEAS 7. When ATI does announce a successor, it will say so on atitesting.com first, and programs will post which version they accept and from what date.
TEAS version history: how often it has changed
The TEAS has changed version a few times. The recent history, from ATI and from Wikipedia's summary of it:
| Version | In use | What marked the change |
|---|---|---|
| TEAS V | until August 31, 2016 | Phased out for TEAS 6 |
| ATI TEAS (Version 6) | August 2016 to June 2022 | 170 questions, 209 minutes, multiple choice only |
| ATI TEAS Version 7 | June 3, 2022 to now | Science split into four areas, new question types, English expanded |
Dates are from ATI (ATI TEAS Version 7) and Wikipedia: Test of Essential Academic Skills. TEAS 6 ran for almost six years. TEAS 7 is now four years and five months old.
What changed from TEAS 6 to TEAS 7
This is the change most "ATI TEAS changes" searches are really about, because study material from before mid-2022 is still everywhere. ATI lists the differences (ATI: TEAS 6 vs TEAS 7):
| Part of the test | TEAS 6 | TEAS 7 (current) |
|---|---|---|
| Total length | 170 questions, 209 minutes | 170 questions, 209 minutes (150 scored, 20 unscored) |
| Science content areas | Mostly anatomy and physiology (32 questions), plus life and physical science and scientific reasoning | Four areas: anatomy and physiology 18, biology 9, chemistry 8, scientific reasoning 9 |
| Science questions | 53 | 50 (44 scored), 60 minutes |
| Question types | Multiple choice only | Multiple choice plus multiple select, fill in the blank, ordered response and hot spot |
| English and language usage | Shorter section | Expanded: 37 questions in 37 minutes |
| Partial credit | Not applicable | None: a multiple select question is all or nothing |
| Score scale | Percent, 0–100% | Percent, 0–100%, equated with TEAS 6 |
The TEAS 7 counts per content area are from ATI's exam details; the TEAS 6 counts are from ATI's comparison as quoted by schools' guides. The full TEAS 7 layout, section by section, is in what is on the TEAS test.
Three of these changes matter most when you prepare:
- Anatomy and physiology shrank, biology and chemistry grew. On TEAS 6 a student could pass science mostly on body systems. On TEAS 7, biology and chemistry together are 17 scored questions, almost as many as A&P. Our guides on TEAS biology and TEAS chemistry cover those two areas topic by topic.
- Some questions give no options. Fill in the blank questions ask you to type a number or word. In math that means you must finish the calculation, not pick the closest answer.
- Select-all questions punish one slip. Pick every correct option and no wrong one, or the question scores zero.
Did TEAS 7 make the test harder?
ATI equated TEAS 7 with TEAS 6, which means a given score is meant to show the same level of skill on both versions. That is why schools did not have to change their cut scores when the new version arrived. A 2022 student FAQ from Los Angeles Harbor College said most schools would likely not lower their admission scores because of the release (LAHC student FAQ).
Whether it feels harder depends on what you're strong in. Someone who knows body systems well but last took chemistry years ago will feel the change. Someone who is quick at typing exact math answers won't mind fill in the blank. For a section-by-section look at what trips people up, see is the TEAS test hard.
When is the new TEAS coming?
There is no date. ATI's help center says the exam is updated about every four to six years, to keep it in line with current education standards (ATI: TEAS 6 vs TEAS 7). Counting from June 2022, four to six years points to a window from mid-2026 to mid-2028. That is our arithmetic, not an ATI announcement, and the 2026–2027 study manual suggests ATI expects Version 7 to be in use through at least 2027.
When TEAS 6 was replaced, the switch was announced well before June 2022, and schools posted the change on their TEAS pages months ahead, with dates for when they would stop accepting the old version. Expect the same pattern next time: an ATI announcement, then a published date, then program-by-program notices.
Why does the ATI TEAS change?
ATI says it revises the TEAS blueprint to match changing Common Core State Standards and what nursing and allied health programs expect students to know on day one (ATI: why is the ATI TEAS exam changing, written for the 2022 change). It also says the current version gives one test for BSN, ADN, PN and allied health programs. Compared with TEAS 6, Version 7 put more weight on chemistry and biology and added select-all questions, a format nursing students meet again on later nursing exams.
Why do so many pages say "2025 TEAS" or "new TEAS 2026"?
Because the year in a title sells books and apps, not because the test changed. Prep books and apps put the year on each edition, and many web pages update their title every January. We found 2026 practice apps whose own listings say the current exam version is TEAS Version 7. When a page promises "the new 2026 TEAS" without linking to an ATI announcement, read it as "our 2026 edition of TEAS 7 practice".
A quick test for any page that claims a change:
- Does it link to atitesting.com, or to a school's admissions page, for the change?
- Does it give a date when the new version starts?
- Does it say what changes, in numbers: questions, minutes, content areas?
If the answer to all three is no, nothing it says should change how you study.
How to check which TEAS version your program accepts
Programs care about two things: the version, and how old the score is. Some, like CCSF and HACC, accept only Version 7. Many accept a score taken within one or two years of the application date. Augusta University, for example, says scores from before August 1, 2023 are not accepted. These rules are on each program's TEAS or admissions page; our list of what TEAS score you need collects 50+ programs with their minimums and limits.
To check yours in five minutes:
- Open your program's admissions page and search it for "TEAS".
- Write down: the version it names (if any), the minimum scores, the time window ("within 2 years of the deadline"), and attempt limits.
- If it names no version and you took the TEAS before June 2022, email the admissions office and ask whether a TEAS 6 score is still accepted. Most windows have now closed for 2021 and early 2022 scores anyway.
- If you are about to book, book Version 7: it is the only version ATI now offers.
If a new TEAS is announced before your test date
Nothing announced means nothing to do. But if ATI does announce a Version 8 while you are studying, use this order of steps:
- Find the switch date. The old version normally stays available until a set day. Testing before it means you sit the version your material was built for.
- Check your program's notice. Ask which versions it will accept for your application cycle, and whether a score on the old version stays valid for its usual window.
- Compare content areas, not marketing. Put the new blueprint next to the current one (the table above) and list only the areas that moved. Most of what you study (fractions, ratios, reading for main idea, grammar, body systems) carried over between every past version.
- Adjust, don't restart. Shift study hours to the new or bigger areas. Keep timed practice for the sections whose timing changed.
Can you use old TEAS 6 study material?
Partly. Reading, math and English skills overlap heavily between TEAS 6 and TEAS 7, so a TEAS 6 book still works for fractions, word problems, main idea and grammar. Science is where it falls short: TEAS 6 books spend far more pages on anatomy and physiology and too few on chemistry and biology, and they have no practice for multiple select, fill in the blank, ordered response or hot spot questions. If your book says "TEAS 6", "ATI TEAS" without a version, or was printed before 2022, add TEAS 7 science and new question types from another source. Our TEAS science cheat sheet lists every science topic of the current blueprint on one page.
What to study for the current TEAS
Since TEAS 7 is the test you will sit, study its blueprint. The order that saves the most time:
- Find your gap per section. Each program sets minimums on the total and sometimes on sections. Our free 15-question TEAS check scores you against your own program's minimum, so you know whether math, science, reading or English needs the hours.
- Cover the big areas first. Anatomy and physiology (18 scored questions) and numbers and algebra (18) are the two largest content areas. Measurement and data (16), key ideas and details (15) and integration of knowledge and ideas (15) come next.
- Practise the new question types on purpose. Type answers with no options, and treat every "select all that apply" as five true-or-false questions.
- Time every section. English gives 60 seconds a question, math 90. Pace practice is in our TEAS exam day tips.
A schedule for all of it: the four-week TEAS study plan, or the one-week plan if your date is close. To see how hard each section is, and which one to start with, read is the TEAS test hard.
New TEAS FAQ
What is the latest version of the TEAS test?
The ATI TEAS Version 7, released June 3, 2022. No later version has been announced as of November 2026.
Is there a TEAS 8?
Not yet. ATI updates the exam about every four to six years, so a successor could come between 2026 and 2028, but ATI has given no date.
When does the TEAS change?
It last changed on June 3, 2022, from TEAS 6 to TEAS 7. The next change has no announced date.
Is the TEAS 7 harder than the TEAS 6?
Scores are equated across the two versions, so the same score means the same skill level. TEAS 7 has more chemistry and biology and new question types, which some test takers find harder.
Will my TEAS 6 score still count?
That is your program's rule. Many only accept scores from the last one or two years, and some accept only Version 7. Check the program's TEAS page.
Do the new question types count more?
No. Every question counts the same: correct or incorrect, with no partial credit. A multiple select question scores only if every choice is right.
